High End Systems’ new DL2 digital light fixture makes its U.S. debut on Sheryl Crow’s “Wildflower” tour starting Oct. 16.
LD Paul Guthrie specified four DL2s and is using them to project onto an aluminum mesh curtain. He’s also using 3 HES Catalyst Pro media servers to drive other parts of the show including the projection and some LED fixtures.
“I was quite impressed with the brightness (of the DL2s),” Guthrie says. “The fact that the server is self-contained appealed to me, too.”
Though DL2 has on-board content, Guthrie says 95 percent of the show’s media is supplied by his own company Toss Film & Design Inc. of Minneapolis, MN. He’s also supplying 98 percent of the Catalyst content as well. “I’m using Catalyst because it is an easy way for me to manage my content,” he notes.
XL Touring Video of Los Angeles is supplying five DL2s (1 is a spare), 2 SLM R12 Barco projectors and video projectionist Keith Lockette. Lighting contractor PRG is supplying the Catalysts, along with the lighting rig.
The tour runs Oct. 16-Oct 31 in the U.S., ending Nov. 4 in London.
DL2, winner of five industry awards, is a digital automated lighting fixture with an integrated media server. It also features the highly-sensitive HAD sensor camera and illuminator, providing a remote control camera network. The Catalyst Pro media server allows the user to apply visual and color effects to media, and it controls and triggers external video switchers and playback devices.
The fixture recently started shipping from HES’ Austin, TX headquarters. XL Touring Video President John Wiseman, who was formerly with High End Systems when the DL2 was undergoing development, bought the first five DL2 units off the production line for this tour.
