Russia’s Safari Circus is entertaining over 4,000 visitors every weekend, with four DL.2s “wowing” the crowds. Not only is this the first installation in Russia with DL.2s, it's the only circus known to have the units under its Big Top.

The first DL.2s in Russia were “popular from the very first performance,” says SiM’s Ivan Rumyanstev. SiM showed the DL.2 in November at the Moscow Exhibition. It was there where the DL.2s caught the eyes of Safari Circus owners Sergey Nesterov and Elena Fedotova, who bought four units for the tour.

Says Safari Circus' Sergey Nesterov, “We considered all new visual technology on the market that time. DL.2 promised more potential than any other solution. DL2s can provide us with lighting effects, video projection, bright laser imitating, interactivity when using with the camera, and 3D objects. The most powerful thing we have ever seen was the Collage Generator feature, which we will use for projections on the surface of circus arena (13x13m). With DL.2 we get much more than we expected! The ability to quickly use sponsor logos, special theme and custom content has already helped us to speed-up paybacks of our investors.”

They’re using a Hog 1000 console for control. “This saves our budget, because we don’t need to buy additional video, laser desks and lots of expensive cable systems. DL.2s perfectly blended with our lighting cuelists,” Nesterov explains.

Art Director/designer Elena Fedotova says she was “highly impressed” with DL.2’s effects. “It took me a long time to believe that it’s real -- that I can implement my dreams about supporting the show visually on such a grand level. Other lighting projectors can reproduce ideas but always with limitations."

She continues, “With DL.2, we started to work immediately after hanging them up. New ideas started generating, and we tried hundreds of variants of effects and fading styles between cues of the show. The possibilities grow wider and wider every day. Every programming day we found ways to use many more effects. The work with the visual side is not finished, and I suppose it will not stop because of the great technology we have in our hands.”

SiM’s Ivan Rumyantsev said he was excited and emotional about his title of Digital Lighting Programming Specialist for the circus project.

“DL.2 forced my imagination and gave birth to new ways of implementing my ideas in the show. We were carried away by the effects. Most of all I was impressed with the new software features: Collage Generator, 3D-objects, Curved Surface Control, special effects (rain, film, fuzz, wobbulation, chroma shift, visual mode). We can add custom content with the CMA software quickly and easily. I combined graphic layers and made fades and mixes in hundreds of ways.”

Says Rumyantsev, “Now with DL2 we can accent certain moments in the show. Audience reaction after the premiere show was very strong. It meant that my work -- as well as that from Sergey, Elena and all the staff of the Safari-Circus – and my wishes to make the audience happy after the 3-hour of the show was brought to life!”

Rumyantsev wants to give special thanks to Arcus Lighting in Germany for their help in this project. “They care about this project and gave us great support and attention to our customers.”

Safari Circus is currently touring the northern side of Russia.
