Subject:  Before Installing Any Mac OS X Update or Other Software

The following Service Bulletins contain information which can effect Catalyst sytem stability and performance.

Other Important System Management Tips
Catalyst and Mac OS X version compatibility chart
Disabling Decklink Video Desktop
Using ATi Displays utility and 60Hz display refresh rates

In addition to the above, as a general rule, modifying Mac OS X software on a mac running Catalyst software should be approached with caution. A few questions you should ask include: 1) Is the software or update required by Catalyst to make it run better? 2) Is there anything I need to do prior to installing the software to help ensure the update is a success? 3) How do I remove an update or software that shouldn't be there?

1) Is the software or update required by Catalyst to make it run better?

In general, High End recommends you not install video editing or other applications or utilities on a Catalyst media server as they may have unexpected effect on Catalyst playback or stability. In addition, software updates from Apple should not be installed if it is not obvious that they are required for Catalyst. Mac OS X updates require several weeks of testing by High End Systems before they are considered for deployment with Catalyst, for example. When in doubt, call High End Support to discuss your reason/rationale for updating Mac OS X or other software prior to making changes on your servers.

2) Is there anything I need to do prior to installing the software to help ensure the update is a success?

Do not install Updates of ANY kind before running Repair Disk from the Mac OS X install DVD to make sure there is no directory corruption present.

To do this:
1. Boot off the disk by holding down the C key.
2. Choose Disk Utility from the menu that comes up.
3. Verify and repair permissions for all of your disks.

3) How do I remove an update or software that shouldn't be there?

Generally speaking, if you install a Mac OS X update that causes unpredictable results, your only recourse may be to reinstall Mac OS X. Thus, you should pay extra care to install nothing or the minimum that is required.
Warning! -- Reinstalling Mac OS X is a process that can destroy any data files you have created, so proceed with caution. High End Systems is not responsible for any lost or deleted data files.

Before reinstalling software, copy any valuable data to an external device.
